How can evidence help inform neglected tropical diseases policy? This is a good question, and recently discussed at a four-day training session in Ghana with a global programme that is concerned with mass drug administration for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Paul Garner and Rachel Isba from the LSTM’s Centre for Evidence Synthesis in Global Health travelled to Accra, Ghana, to deliver a workshop on evidence synthesis in NTDs. Organised in partnership with colleagues in the Ghana Health Service, this workshop forms an output from the evidence synthesis strand of the COUNTDOWN research consortium funding. Twenty-four participants from partnership organisations in Ghana and Liberia completed the four days of training and received certificates of participation from LSTM. Feedback on the workshop was overwhelmingly positive and it will be run again in Cameroon in 2017.
Paul also offered in-country colleagues the opportunity to meet with him the day after the workshop, to discuss individual requirements for support in the area of systematic reviews. Additionally, co-authors in partnership countries have been identified from within the cohort undertaking the workshop, and Paul and his team will continue to work with these individuals on a small number of Cochrane reviews in NTDs.
